Can’t we just sit back and relax?

Does the Bible talk about taking time for yourself to just sit back and relax, or take part in something that isn’t worshiping? Quite honestly, I feel that it is hard to worship 24-7.

In the Bible, God does not tell Christians to be in a worship service 24-7, but He does tell us to have an attitude of worship all the time. This “attitude of worship” means we are to be “praying without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17), that we are to be “rejoice in the Lord always” (Philippians 4:4), that we are to “let this mind be in you that was also in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 2:5), as well as have other attitudes that lead us to “commune” with God day by day, moment by moment. We are also called upon to daily “take up our cross and follow Christ”, set our minds on things above”, and present our bodies as living sacrifices to God”. This “attitude of worship” is enjoyable to the dedicated Christian and there is no need to relax, because it doesn’t make one tired. In fact, this “attitude of worship” brings spiritual strength and vitality. This doesn’t mean you are actively concentrating on spiritual things every moment, but that all you do and say is in the framework of God’s Word and God’s will.

If you are speaking about physical rest from attending worship services or activities, certainly we need to balance our involvement in church with family, job, and personal needs. And the Bible does tell us to rest from our labors and be refreshed physically. God Himself gave us a pattern of rest in creation when He rested on the seventh day, after creating the heavens and the earth (Genesis 2:3). We are told in Psalm 127:2, “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows, for so He gives His beloved sleep.” Therefore, don’t be so busy in worship services and activities that you become physically weary.

May the Lord bless you as you get your rest physically so you can have the strength to concentrate on having an attitude of worship at all times, and thus, you will have inexhaustible energy spiritually!
